Here's a recipe for a plain cake from 1922
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 cup sifted flour
3 level tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
2 eggs
milk
5 Tbsp. well softened butter (but not melted)
Sift together sugar, flour, baking powder and salt
Break two eggs into one cup measure and finish filling measuring cup with milk (will have 2 eggs and however much milk to fill to one cup)
Add milk/egg mixture to dry ingredients ~ add butter
Beat hard until smooth and creamy
Bake at 350 until done (**springs back when touched or toothpick inserted in middle comes out clean**)
